Ok, so this is probably only an extremely epic event in the world of yours truly for MANY reasons, but nevertheless:
1: It's Football
2: It's College Football
3: It's a PAC-10 v. Big Ten match-up
For these reasons alone, it will be amazing. For other reasons, which only Jobi knows besides me, it is a match-up that could decide my emotional stability for a long time to come.
USC V. Penn State.
I'm always going to pull die hard for the California team (but I would prefer if Cal Berkeley would get their goddamned act together sometime soon...), and USC hardly disappoints with Pete Carrol at the helm. His play calls and overall strategy are downright genius; it's really just too bad the PAC-10 recruiting pool is so weak compared to almost every other seriously competitive conference. So I'll be rooting with my 2008 rally beard in full growth, hopefully drinking far more beer than my liver will want me to after New Years Eve.
BUT
Joe Paterno is a legend and a demi-god in college ball, and this years especially strong Penn State team makes me nervous when I think about the relatively far less consistent and fierce showing the Trojans have mounted this year. The Trojans lost their bid by being stupid (akin to previous years' idiotic losses to unranked teams) and lazy. The JoePa's are a solid team and only lost the championship game bid by literally seconds. I've never seen them get lazy.
That being said, the Nittany Lions are playing on the hallowed Rose Bowl stadium ground, stained with the blood of countless USC victims. It's as if some modern day baptists were suddenly transported to the Colliseum and gazed upon the ruby stained ground of the arena before looking up to see the (real) lions' gates being raised. All too appropriately, the stadium will be a wash of crimson jerseys, as I don't think anyone not carrying a California drivers license will be allowed into Pasadena city lines. Joe Paterno may hold the statistical advantage, but the Rose Bowl is pretty much the same thing as home field advantage for Pete Carrol. The Trojans know that field like the back of their hand, and the Lions will be far deeper in enemy territory than they have been in a long time.
It's going to be epic.
If USC loses.....
Everything will be wrong with the world.

VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TROJANS WIN! TROJANS WIN!!!!
TROJANS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pac-10 stomped all over the Tiny-10 today on a perfect sunny day in Pasadena. I attribute the domination mainly to my BCS beard and uncut hair.
The second quarter was just an absolute blowout. I was biting my nails for the first quarter, but once the Trojans started on their second touchdown drive, I don't think the Lions' offense touched the ball for more than a minute until after the half.
I do have a gripe, however, with the way the Trojans played in the second half. I don't know if it was Pete Carrol trying to mess with potential plays for next year or if the team just lost steam, but it looked sloppy and half-hearted. And since they were up 24 points at the half, it just started to look cocky and made the second half far less interesting to watch. Perhaps they were trying to save Joe Paterno some pride? Even so, that's also a little obnoxious on a few levels.
Speaking of the great Joe Pa, though: He is one classy fella. He took that defeat in great stride and sincere professionalism, thus showing us why he is a living legend. No man in college ball deserves more respect than him. Well done, sir.
That being said......
